COMPARING SINGLE-LAYER AND DOUBLE-LAYER PRODUCTION

Whether you want to produce single-layer, double-layer, or both, Cassani Longinotti can deliver the best tile manufacturing and finishing solution for you. This is why many clients turn to us to determine which system is more appropriate to their needs.

Under the older, double-layer process (“DS” or doppiostrato in Italian), slabs and tiles are made up of two layers of material: the first, a colored surface layer, called the noble or face layer, and the second or base layer, using gray cement and simple aggregates for the back of the tile. The base layer has no function once the slab is laid; its only purpose is during the pressing of the tile, when it absorbs the excess water from the face layer, which during production is in a liquid state.

Single-layer tile manufacturing technology (known as “MS”, or monostrato, in Italian) was created and developed by Longinotti Group, after setting out specifically to deliver a single-layer tile with all the qualities of the classic double-layer product. Under our proprietary, patented technology, excess water is removed using special filters and an average pressing capacity three times higher than under the older technology. In this way, a base layer is not required.

The advantages of MS are significant both in technical and economic terms: MS tiles are 40-45% more compact in volume and weight, halving the cost of transport and making much lighter laying surfaces, without sacrificing any of the strength, durability or ease of laying of double-layer tiles.

Other production costs of MS and DS production plants are very similar, including raw materials, electricity, abrasive consumption, labour, plant depreciation, maintenance.
